When ‘Stan’ dropped in 2000 it became one of Eminem’s most enduring hits. There’s a big difference, however, between a great track and one with real cultural impact. ‘Stan’ was both and the word quickly went into common use. It may have taken 17 years but the word has gained official recognition, Eminem credits and all.

An absolute classic of Marshall’s video catalogue has earned half a billion streams on YouTube.

The masterpiece of storytelling, the song got an impressively straightforward video. Dr. Dre directed the project together with his frequent collaborator Philip Atwell, and he chose to follow the story, not to distract from it with visual gimmicks.

Devon Sawa brought his character, Stan, alive. And Dido, whose sampled voice gave the song the signature bittersweet flavour, appeared in the video as his girlfriend.

The song and the video together symbolise the whole era in the music industry but do not feel outdated. The testament to it is the ever-growing number of listeners. Just note that the video has been up on YouTube for 12 years. And the latest 100 million views to its count were recorded in recent months since May 2021.
