Detroit’s own rapper Kash Doll refused to play the games of picking favourites and passing her opinion for a hip hop fact. There is enough space in the culture for both.
After Jamal Crawford said on the Shaquil O’Neil podcast that Jay-Z had done more for the culture than Eminem, and numbers don’t matter here, this opposition has become a favourite topic of hip hop journalists. They ask everybody about their preferences and it usually provides media with some spicy takes.
Some artists, though, do not feel like this comparison and subsequent dismissal of one of them is either fair or relevant. For example, Kash Doll when asked by DJ Vlad on a podcast about her pick flat out refused to play one against each other:
That’s hard to answer, you know why? ‘Cause they are two different people. We got Jigga over here — he talked it up. He came from the streets to rap, marrying Beyoncé, owning liquor, making billion dollar plays. That’s different. Then you got Em. Come from the D. He’s not black and his impact was like, still to this day, he’s still super huge. He has done all his stuff that he has done. He’s made it. What do you mean by impact? Who hit the waves? Man, that’s hard to answer. I’m not even about to do that because when Em came out he ran this shit! Think about it! Eminem! When he came out that was a thing. All you know is Slim Shady! And then Jay-Z…He was from the streets. I could never not respect that man — come from the streets and to being a billionaire. selling. He did it, he did it, they both did it. Man, I’m not picking. You ain’t put me in that.
Kash Doll saw through this design and remained true to herself, paying respect for both rappers and even more so to the game she’s in.
