A new review from an independent film site offers an outsider’s take on “Stans”, highlighting its heart, humour, and a few familiar faces.

Independent movie site Back to the Movies has published a review of “Stans”, and their verdict? This one’s for the day-one ride-or-dies.

The reviewer, who admits to not being deeply immersed in hip hop culture, was surprised by the sincerity and restraint of the fans featured, ranging from a French man making a pilgrimage to Detroit to a woman with a world record for Eminem tattoos. Celebrity cameos include Ed Sheeran, Dr. Dre, and Adam Sandler, but as the site notes, “Stans” does not chase star power, it centres those who kept the flame burning over the years.

The documentary is praised for avoiding the pitfalls of toxic fandom, instead showing fans who respect Eminem’s privacy, even if they have never met him. There is also an acknowledgement of the boundaries that fame forces into place, including a brief story from Em about being chased out of a mall with his daughter.

More than a career retrospective, the film is described as “a love letter to fans”, with a tone that says, “I love you, but don’t get too crazy on me”. Though the site wished Eminem’s own commentary had been expanded, they appreciated the choice to let fans lead the narrative.

As the reviewer puts it: “There really is a little Slim Shady in all of us”.
The website gives “Stans” 4 out of 5 stars with a summary:
“Stans is a love-letter to fans but it feels like only the header has been penned and there’s plenty more left beneath the surface”.

“Stans” is in theatres worldwide from 7 August 7 for one weekend only. Tickets for the global release are now available at stansmovie.com.
