The hip hop culture lost another talent recently when the youngest Migos artist was shot to death in Texas. A DJ, who worked with the group from the very beginning, shares his memories.
The Guardian published a collection of testimonies from people working with Migos from their early days. They all call Takeoff the quietest and the humblest of artists they have worked with. The youngest of three Migos artists, Takeoff took joy in rapping more in any social activity surrounding it. DJ Ray G, who met with the group in 2011 and since then gone on to many a tour with them and Cardi B, says that Takeoff was a dutiful student of classic hip hop and Eminem was one of his teachers:
Sometimes [Takeoff] didn’t even go out. We’d come back home, and he’d still be awake – smoking, chilling, vibing. And you check the YouTube history and it’s Tupac and Biggie, shit like that. This kid’s 16, studying his craft – like, ‘I ain’t going out with you tonight. I’m going to stay here and listen to Big, Pac, Eminem.
It is indeed tragic that Takeoff has faced the same fate as two of his teachers. Tupak Shakur was shot in 1996, Notorious B.I.G. was killed in 1997, and Takeoff was murdered in 2022. Will the chain of mindless cruelty ever end?
