Skylar Grey enjoys her growing popularity as a recording artist, but there is still a shadow of disbelief in how her life is turning around.

Skylar talked about it to Graham “GSM” Matthews on his podcast. Re mentioned that despite the vast number of celebrities she had met through her work, she did not become desensitised to greatness:

I used to say, “Oh, I don’t get starstruck”. But I was just trying to be too cool. Of course, I get starstruck. I still get starstruck working with Eminem. I listened to him when I was a kid, and I can’t believe that he has been so supportive. We’ve done over a dozen songs, we’ve worked on over a dozen songs together. Whether he knows it or not, he’s kind of my mentor. But it’s just weird, and I’m still struck by that.

However, Skylar’s ambitions have always been high. Working with Eminem for the first time, she fully expected to be the one to record vocals for “Love The Way You Lie”. She did not expect to be replaced by Rihanna and did not expect that this song would change her place in the music industry. However, everything turned out for the best. The song became an instant super hit, and Skylar found herself occupied with writing for superstars. It is changing now:

Usually, I prefer to write songs for myself. I grew up imagining myself being a recording artist, not a songwriter. But then it kind of happened when I wrote “Love The Way You Lie” for Eminem and Rihanna. It was an accident. I wrote the hook, and I wasn’t expecting my voice to be replaced on the hook. But I’m happy about it because Rihanna’s amazing, and it blew the song up to have them both on it. But that kind of put me on this path that I wasn’t expecting in my career, of like writing songs for other people, and I did it for a while. It was really good money, but at some point last year, I made the decision to stop doing that because it’s not really my passion. It’s good money, but it’s not really how I want to be spending my days.

So the success of her recent single, “Last One Standing”, recorded for the Venom franchise with Eminem, Polo G and Mozzy, is very important for Skylar. She is an independent artist who gets more and more traction and attention now, whose audience is growing and who deserves to get recognised for her talent, her voice and her vision.
