The Dallas rapper reveals that he didn’t even know initially for whom he was recording the hook. And when he learnt that it was Eminem he refused to believe it.
MAJ got a call from his manager in November 2020 with a request to record a hook from an anonymised reference tape. MAJ actually liked the stuff he had to work with but he wanted to know who is going to use it. He wanted to give the best result for that particular artist. It took some time to squeeze a confession from his manager but when he learned that a secret customer was in fact Eminem – it was hard to believe. MAJ told BlackySpeakz:
I’m gonna be real, it was hard, it was really hard. Because, like, Eminem? Eminem doesn’t reach out to people! Eminem doesn’t like constantly like seek for stuff like that. He pretty much has everything solidated. He’s a fucking legend, he doesn’t need anybody. He pretty much has everything in his camp. It was just crazy to believe that. It was hard to wrap that around my head.
In a couple of days after that MAJ talked to Eminem and Paul Rosenberg over the phone. For MAJ that was not his first encounter with Paul as he was the last artist who Paul signed as CEO of Deaf Jam. And Paul became the essential link between Eminem and MAJ, the young rapper learnt from that conversation:
Paul Rosenberg on a phone call told me, like, he gave [Eminem] a list of artists that were new and he heard one of my songs and was like, “That’s the guy”. So he picked me. That is just crazy to think about. Your idol literally just saying “Yeah, I want you”. I just couldn’t believe it until it was out. And then he also gave me a descriptive of how he wanted [the hook] because at first I kind of didn’t get it. I got the style of it but I had to make it more jumpy for him. And then he literally was telling me, yo, I’m so talented, I’m amazingly gifted… I’m like, “Bro, you’re fucking Eminem, you cannot be telling me all of it, bro!” He literally said I was going to blow up and he’s happy that he got on this early too. It was just hard to take in, it was insane to take in. I’m just so blessed to have this opportunity and blessed to be a part of his discography. Being a huge fan and growing up with his music, listening to him at times when I was low and watching my dad and my mom listening to Eminem around me when I was young — it’s insane to be part of that shit now.
For MAJ years of dedication and hard work did not go to waste but brought him to the place where his idol showcases his talent on “These Demons”.
