Logic is sure he held his ground against the artist he idolised on their joint record.
DJ Whoo Kid invited this young rapper to the Whoo’s House podcast. Logic might be young, but he has managed to retire and come back already. From his career break he broughtb a liberating feeling of not giving a fuck anymore, yet he remebers vividly how overwhelmed he was when Marshall invited him to open for the Hawaii show and played him the “Homicide” verse.
Logic told this story from the very beginning:
I had that beat and then I started rapping. I just was like, man, this is good. I’m just gonna have fun with it. And Paul was the president of Def Jam. So I was like, shit, let’s pull some strings. What’s up, Paul? And I sent him the record and he got it to Em. And obviously, I didn’t expect… I thought he was gonna be like, “Ehhh, I’m okay”. Becaus I’m also rapping on that. I’m RAPPING! And then I got a call that he likes the song. He’s gonna do the song. I’m like, oh, my god, it’s crazy! A week later I get a call: “Yo, Em wants you to go open up for him in Hawaii at a stadium. So, I go out there. I’m nervous. I’m so hyped. And Imma meet him. You don’t understand, I used to put “Forgot About Dre” from the radio on a cassette. My sister would put it back and forth so it would be all the way on side A and all the way on side B. And I would just go, “Nowadays, everybody wanna talk like they got somethin’ to say // But nothin’ comes out when they move their lips // Just a bunch of gibberish // And motherfuckers act…”, you get it. And this is the guy that’s my first real memory of consuming hip hop and it was him and Dre. And here I am today about to fucking go cray. I’m getting into this golf cart and I can’t believe this shit. We get there and there are all these fucking security guys and they’re all nice. I walk in and I see Royce 5’9, who’s the homie, he’s got his glasses on and shit. And then The Alchemist was there. So I dab them and then here comes fucking Eminem with his beard, that’s new at the time. And he was so fucking cool. He’s the biggest rap nerd. We were sitting and talking about shit, and I was like, man, I’m sorry, am I being weird? He’s like, no, you’re not being weird. Then two minutes later I’ll be like, am I being weird now? No, man! And the third time I was like, am I being weird? He’s like, now you are being weird, shut the fuck up. And he’s like, “I got some”. And this motherfucker pulls out a CD. On his CD player, in the green room, he plays the song. And while he’s playing, I’m in my head like, oh my god, he’s gonna have a verse here. And he killed it! One thing I will sit here and say, me and him was like this [Logic gestures a perfect balance, equal hight] on the record. I didn’t get stunned, I didn’t. And I did everything I could and I loved it. I didn’t go back in, I didn’t anything. What I gave him and what he delivered just felt like it was our record. It wasn’t anybody trying one up or anything like that. It was a dream come true. Absolutely amazing.
