Legendary Ice-T, the first rapper to explicitly rap about gang life back in the 1980s, thinks that 50 Cent is the last gangster rapper and the era has gone now.
Ice-T sat down with UniqueAccessEnt to discuss how time has changed:
To me, the last gangster rapper was 50 Cent, because, to me, he embodied that image. You know, that “I don’t give a fuck. 50 Cent had you really believe you did not wanna fuck with him. I heard 50 Cent when he was beefing with Fat Joe, and he was like, “I am right down the street. It is really hard to find a nigga when you know he got a gun, ain’t it?” I was like, “Okay!”.
I think Fifty was the last one who did it that I believed. I think now, the new trap rappers… They’ve convinced me they can get high, they’ve convinced me maybe that they can sell a little drugs, but they don’t scare me. I think a real gangster rapper has to scare you a little bit. There is no new people that do it. […] That’s not new. We scared the world so quickly, but then once Eminem did it they were like, “Okay” Now, people are kind of conditioned.
