Fifty makes some sad observations about how Grammy is disconnected from the culture and how many talented artists will never be recognised by the mainstream.
Talking to Spotify’s Rap Caviar, 50 Cent mused over the possibility of Pop Smoke to get nominated to the Grammys and he was not very optimistic:
If it’s recognized, it’ll only get recognized because he’s gone. The content is similar to what I would do. They didn’t recognize mine. They gave me GRAMMYs when I was with Em. When I’m on records with Eminem. Other than that, they’re afraid to give him GRAMMYs because they think it’s teaching the audience to want to be like Pop. And to be like him is to be a part of gang culture. Who you see get GRAMMYs that is making Drill music? You mean to tell me ain’t none of those songs worthy of it? Those platforms are not for them to acknowledge. It’s for the culture, the people to embrace those tones and to really appreciate the artist for doing that.
To be fair, 50 Cent was nominated for Grammys 14 times and not all of the nominated performances were recorded with Marshall. However, Fifty won only once, Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group for “Crack A Bottle” with Eminem and Dr. Dre in 2014.
Fifty tries to be Eminem for Pop Smoke and get his mother to the award show, but if his estimations are correct then their chances are slim.
