Eminem took the stand in court this week as the man who had broken into his home not once, but twice, was convicted of stalking and home invasion.

On Wednesday (May 7), a Michigan jury found 32-year-old Matthew Hughes guilty of first-degree home invasion and aggravated stalking after he trespassed onto Eminem’s property last August. Apparently, Hughes entered through an unlocked door, swiped a bike, and fled when he realised security was on to him. Four days later, an employee spotted him at a nearby Walmart, and Hughes was promptly arrested.

The trial lasted two days and even saw Eminem take the stand to testify. Macomb Daily quotes the words assistant Macomb County Prosecutor Steve Fox addressed to the jury: “People long for fame, they want fame. But fame can put you in a bubble. That’s the life that he (Eminem) has to live in. Why? Because of men like Matthew Hughes”.

The jury did not need long, just 90 minutes, to reach a verdict. Hughes now faces several years in jail, with sentencing set for June 17, according to WDIV 4.

You might remember the intruder’s name: Hughes made headlines in 2020 when he smashed a window with a brick and entered Eminem’s Detroit-area home, where he threatened Marshall’s life. That time, Em confronted an intruder, escorted him to the door, and handed him over to security, who held the perpetrator until police arrived. Hughes later pleaded guilty and was given five years’ probation and time served (524 days in the county jail).

Before all that, in 2019, he had already been busted for trespassing while trying to find Em, once showing up at a home he no longer owned.

Call it obsession, bad decisions, or malicious intent — the courts have now spoken, and it is time to put a stop to this behaviour.
