Tyler, the Creator is well known for his respect for Eminem, the Detroit wonder who inspired him to rap. Tyler has been following Marshall’s evolution for decades, and he has an opinion on how potent Eminem has become.
He gave this opinion when visiting Ebro Darden’s morning show on Hot97. Ebro asked Tyler about working with Wayne on Tyler’s latest album “Call Me If You Get Lost” and the “Igor” star lit up:
I love him. He keeps getting better. I think people don’t realise he keeps getting better because of some of the beat choices or whatever, but that man has only gotten better on some technical shit. In a good way. Unlike Marshall. Marshall got too good that it’s like gross. Like too technical and good. Bro, we can’t even fathom it, stop. Wayne is tastefully good now. Well, not now, excuse me. He’s been good. But now!… Watching one of the greats keep getting better… Even Jay [Z]. Watching Jay get better makes no sense to me.
Ebro was curious about how Tyler is going to handle his own progress in this discourse of getting too good for the audience to keep up, as Tyler implied about Eminem. When his music becomes, as Tyler said, “potent” and overwhelming for somebodies ears. And he thinks that it is not an issue because there will be people who can appreciate an artist’s evolution even if some of his followers will drop off at some point:
Some things are reference points, and then sometimes it’s a drop-off. Alright, this album wasn’t for you, but look at what made up the difference with all these new fans and new listeners that I got off of “Igor”. You don’t like it, that’s cool. It’s okay, it’s fine. Eminem’s fine.
Eminem is indeed fine. He focuses on his music, do not promote his surprise albums, and there are enough people to appreciate his music in all its exquisite complexity. He added over 220,000 new subscribers on Spotify just the other week, it is the sixth best result among the artists of all genres.
