From Dre’s meticulous line-by-line direction to Eminem’s relaxed attitude despite strict studio rules, 2 Chainz gave insight into working with both icons.

In a new Club Shay Shay interview with Shannon Sharpe, 2 Chainz looked back on recording sessions with Dr. Dre and Eminem — two hip hop giants known for very different studio vibes.

He described Dre’s legendary perfectionism firsthand. Working out of Dre’s high-end home studio, 2 Chainz said the super-producer had him re-record a single line multiple times until it landed exactly how he imagined. “He’s a perfectionist”, Chainz said with respect. “That’s why you want to be around him. He records every day whether he’s going to put out somebody or not. He’ll make like three full songs a day, with all types of instrumentation, with a whole skit involved. He likes it. He is still musically motivated”.

His session with Eminem was memorable for different reasons. While he did not reveal the track they were working on when it happened, he recalled how protective Em’s team was during the recording. “I couldn’t smoke in there”, he said. “It was kinda funny. It was his people, not Eminem. Eminem was somewhere writing, but his people are just so concerned with him, they put the speakers outside so I could listen to the beat”.

Em himself was not fazed, though, notes 2 Chainz: “I come back in to do my verse and the door’s closed and I’m in the booth smoking and I see Em out there and I’m like, ‘He in there while I’m recording, that’s hard’. He’s about to come in and say something, but his people are like, ‘No! Don’t go in there, he’s smoking’. Em looks like, ‘Sit the fuck down, what do you think I’m about to do?’ I remember them trippin’ on him, and he was not trippin’ at all”.

It is good to see that Marshall is secure enough in his sobriety that being around someone smoking weed does not throw him off. The whole situation echoes the playful setup of the “From The D 2 The LBC” video, his joint track with Snoop Dogg, another well-known smoker. Life, as always, finds its way into the art.
