Eminem’s new lyrics are full of weed puns — unexpectedly so for a famously clean artist.
“From The D 2 The LBC” is the first collaboration between Em and Snoop Dogg in 22 years. And Marshall started off by highlighting Snoop’s smoking habit:
That’s how I know that I’m in the studio with the Doggy (Where?)
In Californi’ ’cause my homie from Long Beach
Always got that bomb weed
Snoop and his spliffs are notorious in the business. Last year, 50 Cent reported on how upset Snoop was when Fifty hit him with a “No Smoking” policy on the BMF set. Snoop owns his weed brand, Leafs by Snoop, so the quality of products he uses is top-notch.
Having just joked about his bottle-blond period on the Elvis tribute “The King and I“, Eminem touches the topic again:
just like that blonde bleach
I went platinum then so did my albums
Back to weed puns, Em calls Snoop by his government name and dips into the Marvel universe for a perfect simile to talk about something strong and green, just like leaves Snoop smokes:
Calvin’s turning me into a zombie
‘Cause these buds are like the Hulk, they’re twice the size that his arm be
And that is some strong green
Marshall shoots at racist TV chef Paula Deen but doesn’t waste too much time on her. The picture he paints, though, is vivid:
I will treat Paula Deen like a fuckin’ human pinball machine
Bouncing balls off her tonsils
When it comes to namedropping, this verse doesn’t have a high count of cultural icons that Eminem usually weaves into his lyrics. He has a laundry list of names to mention when it comes to artists he bodied on their own tracks, even at the beginning of his career when he was still wearing cheap Hanes t-shirts. But the only name he would give attention to in this song is his friend, Dr. Dre:
Still wearing Hanes T-shirts, I done bodied some features with legendary names
Was there when Dre turned The Chronic to monetary gain
Then Em goes back to his weed-inspired wordplay cross-pollinated by another Marvel superhero:
‘Cause dope is addictive, just like they call it mari-ju-ana
‘Cause like marriage, you wanna marry Jane
It’s like you and Spider-Man feel the very same
Marshall is finishing his verse once again by reminding us about his body count:
I got more hits than a contract killer
Like the caterpillars that don’t got antennas
In other words, I don’t got no goddamn fillers
He plays on entomology terms here — antennas/feelers/. Yet, he talks about not having fillers, empty shots and half-arsed attempts in recording whatever just for the sake of staying relevant.
And finally, the biggest shout-out Eminem gives here is on the chorus. It’s a message to his native Detroit, the city that made him and made it to the song title:
Whether you Eastside or Westside of the 313, let’s see them guns blaze
