Fantasy Verzuz is everybody’s favourite game. But when it comes to discussing Eminem, subjective opinions of hip hop critics stray too far away from facts.
Low, the host of the LowKey podcast and the person behind CheetSheet Verzuz playlists, initiated the most recent flare of this discourse. Yesterday he plunged into the topic, revealing that he would not watch Eminem on Verzuz in general and Eminem vs Hov in particular. He shrugged off all lists of Em’s hits suggested by other Twitter users and declared:
Clearly these convos are all subjective, but none of y’all gonna convince me Hov is getting smoked by Kanye. OR that Em and Hov would be something to watch. Like please stop
Everybody is entitled to their opinions even if they are wrong. When a popular platform amplifies these opinions – they become dangerous. That’s why initially, nobody important got involved in the conversation with Low, but when Ebro Darden came to support this point of view, some actors were irked by the ignorance.
Ebro Darden is a household name in hip hop, and hosting one of the most influential podcasts on Apple music, he channels his opinions into discourse. His subjectivity absorbs the authority of the global corporation that gave him space to vocalise his thoughts. And his thoughts were:
Nope. I don’t think his music fits the scenario
Page Kennedy, a rapper and a journalist himself, could not believe his eyes. His response was sarcastic:
Yeah he only the greatest rapper and most successful selling artist in human existence. I’m pretty sure NO ONE wants to see that skill of hip hop display. No one would get excited about that energy, breath control, and stage presence in a VS. He probably doesn’t even get views
KXNG Crooked entered the conversation calm as always and dressed his disagreement with the statement that Em’s music does not fit the Verzuz model with an offer to curate a Verzuz playlist for Em to end all speculations:
If he ever decides to do it I hope he calls me to help with song choices because we’re going to come out of the gate smackin tf out of somebody
Crook might be right. Verzuz is not the place a rapper should go wearing a heart on their sleeve. It’s a marketing battle. Yet Eminem has enough ammunition to destroy all resistance.
Still, the consensus so far is that Eminem just cannot be bothered with all this noise and unlikely will ever show up at Verzuz. But what if?… What would you put on Em’s Verzuz playlist?
