In 2000 Floyd Mayweather entered the ring bumping Royce’s collaboration with DJ Premier to face his toughest opponent ever.
Floyd had a perfect score of 23 wins, 17 of them by knockouts, and zero losses. Burton had his share of defeat, but he came to fight and left an impression on the undefeated champion. To the extent that Mayweather consistently names this fight as one of the most challenging in his career.
So when Royce decided to revise this bout, it appeared that Floyd made his entrance to the sound of his 1999’s collaboration with DJ Premier, “Boom”.
They recorded this track way before their Prhyme project was born, but you can feel that these two had incredible creative energy flowing between them even back then. Royce told the story of this record in the interview with Complex:
I went to the studio to see Premier for something, I can’t remember what. He told me he had a beat for Capone-N-Noreaga, which was that beat. So he played it for me and I think I begged him for it. He was like, ‘You know what, I’ll just make them something else and I’ll let you take this one.’
I was staying in Harlem. So I went to his crib that night and wrote it and went back the next day and laid it. And then I had the idea to put the ticking in there because obviously that’s what the concept is. So I asked him if I could add a clock ticking.
The result became one of the most recognisable records for both Royce and Preemo.
Prhyme MC posted a snippet of Floyd’s televised fight on his Instagram with a caption:
I was watching Floyd on the Million Dollars Worth of Game podcast and he said Emanuel Augustus (Burton) was one of his toughest fights so I looked it up and …. 😳 Spooky
