Two hip hop legends let the listeners in on the creative process behind their star-studded track “Gunz N Smoke” with Eminem and 50 Cent, as well as Em’s meticulous approach to studio work.
Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg recently sat down with Complex to discuss “Missionary”, Snoop’s first album entirely produced by Dre in three decades. A standout on the record is “Gunz N Smoke”, featuring Eminem and 50 Cent, which both artists say was a long-overdue collaboration showcasing their combined chemistry. Snoop shared:
All three of us loved Dr. Dre production, and we all felt like we needed a record where we all sounded together.
Dr. Dre praised the unbreakable bond between the collaborators:
We all show up for each other. None of us is ever saying no to each other.
When asked about critical feedback during the creation of the track, Dre credited Eminem for pushing boundaries in the studio and noted how far Em has gone from his early days, learning the ropes from working with him:
The critics come from Eminem. When we started out, he was over my shoulder, like, ‘What does that do? What does that do?’ We fucked around, he learned the technical part of the studio, and now, [he’s asking] “Can you turn my vocal left to Bb?” What the fuck?!
Whether Dre listened to Eminem’s remarks or not, we know Marshall’s technical precision and relentless pursuit of perfection helped elevate “Gunz N Smoke”, creating a track that blends the unique styles of all four icons over Dre’s masterful production.
