Skylar Grey visited Bedroom Beethovens podcast to talk about creativity in lockdown, finding her calling and enjoying the freedom of independence as well as facing its challenges.
Being a singer/songwriter, Skylar writes not only for herself but for other big names in the industry. Her songs were put on wax by Diddy, Nicki Minaj, Lupe Fiasco, Macklemore, Kehlani, Slaughterhouse, J. Cole and many more.
Skylar Grey is very familiar to Eminem fans as a voice and a pen on some of his highly acclaimed hits. And to be honest, she submitted much more than we would ever hear. Skylar opened her “Rejected” folder recently to share some of her songs that were written to other artists and never made it to the final stage of production – this folder is full of treasures.
However, Skylar does not feel bitter about it. She understands that artists pursue their own goals:
Everybody just wants to have the best chance with their music all the time, even big people like Eminem. He told me one time, because I think for one album I wrote four songs, he was like, “I can’t have you sing every song on my record!”
The podcast host suggested his own solution for this little problem:
He did the whole album with Royce da 5’9”, you and he can just come out with a record together.
That would be cool,
Skylar agrees. She mentioned that she is absolutely ready for this last week in her Q&A.
She is not going to wait idly for this though and she is thinking about releasing an album with the new music she is creating now. She already has her October weekly songs produced, released and backed up with videos.
