One of the Detroit finest MCs praises the call for unity that Big Sean placed with his “Friday Night Cypher” that brought together city rappers from different walks of life.
Royce values his message even more because he remembers that hip hop used to be much more destructively aggressive and regrets contributing to this culture. In his Instagram video he said:
There was a time when me, myself was on TV, on a “Beef” DVD going at it with D12 and showing the world that we can be competitive towards each other. And I’m just looking at it in retrospect, really looking at everything all these years later, grown-up – I can honestly say, we’ve gained nothing out of that. I’m not a very regretful guy but I can help but imagine what things would have been like had we realised the importance of unity and how strength is in numbers, and who our true enemy is. And it’s not each other. The enemy is not your brother.
This is exactly what he said on his verse on Sean’s cypher:
A kind man knows a blind man holds grudges
A wise man knows a wise man knows nothin’
