Today in 2005, Eminem’s hits compilation opened its chart run, landing atop the Billboard 200. Now it is the longest charting hip hop album in history.
“The Hits” were released after only three major-label albums, basically, at the beginning of Marshall’s mainstream career. Yet, the impact it has on the culture is undeniable. People just do not stop listening to it.
The project is charting right now on the Billboard 200 at No. 79. It is the 559th week of the album’s incredible chart run. This year, “Curtain Call” overtook “Greatest Hits” by Guns N’ Roses to become the fifth longest charting album in history across all genres. But even before that, “Curtain Call” was the longest charting album released by a solo artist.
The project is doing well in the UK as well. It is also the longest charting hip hop album on the Official Charts UK. “Curtain Call: The Hits” debuted there at No.1 in December 2005 and spent five consecutive weeks atop the chart, three weeks longer than in the US. Its total run counts 493 weeks now — 261 weeks of them are from its most recent uninterrupted run that started in January 2017.
