While big media keeps clutching their pearls after the “WAP” Grammy performance, social media users come up with an unexpected argument in their defence – Eminem.

Apparently, a raunchy song’s late-night performance provoked an onslaught of complaints to and at the TV network that broadcast the Grammy ceremony. Continuously concerned for their kids’ innocence, some conservative public members raised an outcry once again, blaming artists for perverting moral values, corrupting the youth, etc.

Sounds familiar, as Eminem has been on the receiving end of similar accusations for decades now. However, many social media users do not seem to be able to balance complex ideas. While grasping this similarity between two artists, they feel the need to stomp over one of them to elevate the other.

This is how this argument made its way to the Internet:

At the Grammys 20 years ago Eminem rapped about murdering a pregnant woman, with Elton John singing the chorus, while the world applauded their courage. How is what Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion did in any way as extreme as that? Did y’all live through the early 2000s?

The level of confusion demonstrated in this tweet is extraordinary. To describe “Stan” as the song about murdering a pregnant woman is the same as describing “Itsy Bitsy Spider” as the ode to aminal cruelty. With all the controversy behind Eminem’s appearance at the Grammys and his collaboration with Elton John, the root of it was completely different, as you can learn from a detailed article published in EJ magazine #36.

On the other hand, some people provided the opposite suggestion:

Instead of Canceling Eminem, why not cancel Cardi B and Megan after that performance last night at the Grammys? #ThatsMyUnpopularOpinion

It is a good thing that Eminem has cancelled cancel culture and does not feel the need to shun other artists.
