The most significant contemporary visual artists re-imagine 57 Interscope album covers — 12 of them belong to Eminem.
The project titled “Artists Inspired by Music: Interscope Reimagined” will be presented as an exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and short runs of 100 vinyl copies of Interscope albums and singles with new, re-imagined covers. The list of inspirations includes some of the label’s biggest and most influential groups, rappers and singers, such as Dr. Dre, 2Pac, U2, Eminem, 50Cent, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige, Bille Eilish, Timbaland and Kendrick Lamar. Eminem is the only artist whose entire catalogue inspired renowned artist Damien Hirst.
Billboard quotes Steve Berman, vice chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M: “While this groundbreaking art exhibit will be on view at LACMA only for a limited time, we thought launching a series of limited-edition vinyl to honor both our recording artists and the extraordinary visual artists who contributed pieces to this effort, would be a great way for this celebration to live on for years, and at the same time was a cool way to invite music fans into the Interscope’s 30th celebration”.
The albums will be released in groups each day from January 27 to January 31. Each comes with a numbered archival quality giclee printed cover in a custom Gucci box. The price tag is unsurprising — a customer should be able to pay $2,500 for an album.
All net profit from the project goes to the Iovine and Young Foundation, which is building a school in South Los Angeles.
By the way, Dr. Dre sat as a knight in shining armour for an oil painted portrait that is now a new cover of his classic album “Chronic 2001”.
