50 Cent is planning a big-screen reunion with Eminem. However, this time, it’s not for music videos or tours.
The rapper turned media mogul has hinted that he wants his longtime friend and collaborator to create original music for the upcoming Street Fighter film, in which Fifty plays the iconic boxer Balrog.
Over the weekend, Fifty took to Instagram to tease fans with the idea:
“I’m gonna get @eminem on deck to make some music for this movie Street Fighter. New music on the way!”
While no official word has come from Eminem or his camp, the possibility isn’t far-fetched. The two have decades of shared history. Moving from “Get Rich or Die Tryin’” and the Shady/Aftermath empire to becoming close friends, their creative chemistry remains unmatched.
A potential return to soundtracks
Eminem is no stranger to the big screen. He won an Oscar for “Lose Yourself” from 8 Mile, penned a song and (and a verse on another one) for the Venom franchise, and most recently contributed to Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis soundtrack. Still, Fifty knows better than anyone that getting Marshall to leave the house is a different story.
Years ago, 50 Cent recounted how Eminem turned down a high-profile tour with him and Dr. Dre just because he didn’t want to leave his family. Millions weren’t enough to make Eminem go, learnt Fifty. Once, Fif brought Eminem an $8 million movie deal, which Marshall declined because he did not see himself in that role.
“He’s not one of those people who are moved by money”, shrugged Fif, telling this story. “He has a different kind of motivation”.
Still, it has never stopped Fifty from trying to rope Eminem into his projects. Sometimes, like with the BMF cameo, he succeeds. Now, Fifty airs this idea of commissioning music for the movie from Eminem. If he pulls it off, it would mark a major return of the duo as active creative forces in film and music.
Busy days for 50 Cent
Meanwhile, Fifty is everywhere. He’s been promoting Sean Combs: The Reckoning, a highly successful Netflix docuseries he executive produced. Though some critics see it as his personal vendetta, Fif insists he stayed hands-off.
“There’s no place for me, I didn’t make the docuseries”, he told GQ. “I got the best possible people to make one”.
So while he plays Balrog in Street Fighter, he’s still plotting behind the scenes. If Eminem joins the soundtrack, it might just be the knockout punch this film needs.
