A Metro Detroit dealership caught heat over a Lions-themed truck ad that included Eminem’s music. Now, the case has been settled behind the scenes.
It’s all good now between Eminem’s publisher and LaFontaine Ford.
In January this year, Eight Mile Style filed a lawsuit alleging copyright infringement and asking the court to order the dealership to stop using the song and pay damages. It claimed that a dealership under the LaFontaine Automotive Group used “Lose Yourself” in a social media video without permission. The clip promoted a special edition Detroit Lions-themed F-150 truck and was posted across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.
The dealership pointed the finger at a third-party marketing vendor, which it said acted without permission. That vendor has since been fired.
Now, the situation appears to be resolved. On April 24, Eight Mile Style announced it had dropped its legal action. Attorney Howard Hertz confirmed to Detroit’s Local 4 that “the video containing the musical composition at issue has been removed from all platforms”.
Looks like both sides are moving on.
Eminem himself was never involved in this legal action; it was a dispute initiated and handled entirely by a publishing company that owned his early catalogue.
