Eminem is known for supporting his local football team but he also supports its players when they speak out against systemic racism and white privilege.
Marshall Mathers used his platform to amplify the voice of Detroit Lions’ quarterback Matthew Stafford who penned an article for The Players’ Tribune, a new media company that provides athletes with a platform to connect directly with their fans.
In this article, the football player tries reasoning with people who only see sports as a distraction and ignore the reality of lives of athletes whose performance they enjoy, athletes who happen to go through a terrifying experience of everyday racial inequality.
Stafford, who has learned a lot by listening to his Black teammates and observing how differently they are treated, wrote:
Police brutality, white privilege, racism — it’s all real.
It’s time we stop pretending, or defending, or just closing our eyes to what’s right in front of us. We have to listen, and we have to keep having these hard conversations.
Eminem shared his article with a caption:
Proud of Matt for writing this, everyone needs to use their platform to speak out. #BlackLivesMatter
