Working in the music industry was a challenging experience for a young single mother but she made her impact on “Not Afraid”.

Kristen Ashley Cole, as she credited on the anthem from “Recovery”, made her success outside of the entertainment industry and now “Forbes” publishes an interview with her as a multimillionaire beauty entrepreneur.

From the interview, you can learn that while she was a successful songwriter and a singer, the precarious conditions, long studio hours and a fraction of profit that she as a music writer, had to split with other writers on a team, did not give her and her kids any financial stability.

Getting signed to work with The Game was an improvement, admits Kay Cola:

Universal came to me and I couldn’t say no. They signed me to work with [rapper] The Game and I needed the money. I knew I was being underpaid, but it was more than I was used to. That paycheck allowed me to get an apartment and establish some normalcy for my kids.

Working with Eminem was certainly a high point in my music career. The song was ‘Not Afraid,’ from the Recovery album. It was a very collaborative experience and I was both singing and writing for the track.

Dr Dre was great to work with, too. He would let me do my thing and give me guidance afterward.
