Eminem’s first major-label album marked his explosive entrance into the mainstream, and it is still one of the most played albums of 1999.
Though it trails behind his newer releases in overall stream count, “The Slim Shady LP” holds its own. It is the sixth most streamed album released in 1999 across all genres and the second most streamed hip hop project from that year, just behind Dr. Dre’s “2001”. Not bad for a record that dropped before streaming even existed.
Eminem’s newest album, “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)”, currently holds the lowest streaming total in his catalogue, but not for long. With over 1.7 billion streams already, it is on pace to leapfrog “The Slim Shady LP” in the near future.
Still, numbers aside, Eminem’s debut remains a cornerstone of his legacy. Tracks like “My Name Is”, “Guilty Conscience”, and “Role Model” continue to attract both longtime fans and new listeners discovering the origins of Slim Shady.
