Eight Mile Style, Eminem’s music catalog publishing company, has sued Spotify, claiming the Swedish company does not have a copyright license to stream rapper’s music.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, EMS accused Spotify of “willful copyright infringement” for streaming Lose Yourself and approximately 250 of Eminem’s songs without having a license or paying royalty.
“Spotify has not accounted to Eight Mile or paid Eight Mile for these streams but instead remitted random payments of some sort, which only purport to account for a fraction of those streams,” according to the lawsuit. Also, it claims Spotify labelled “Lose Yourself” as “Copyright Control” , the category consisting of songs whose owners it was unable to identify. EMS considers it “absurd” that Spotify cannot find a publisher, since “Lose Yourself” was famously written for 8 Mile (with the same name as the publisher has) and won an Oscar.
