Last summer Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine pledged to build a school for talented kids in Leimert Park, Los Angeles. True to their word, Dr. Dre came to open school doors and greet new students.
Last year, Dr. Dre and his Interscope fellow revealed their plans to open a new school in Leimert Park, a mostly Black community with 72% of the population identifying as African American and about 16% identifying as Latino. The decision to open the school in Leimert Park demonstrates a need to provide innovative educational opportunities and experiences for all students, specifically Black and Latino youth. The academy was positioned to enrol students who might have limited access to quality school experiences due to their social status. The interdisciplinary and hands-on approach means to ensure that every graduate will be prepared for a real life outside of school and have exceptional employability.
As promised, the project was finished in time for a new school year, and Dr. Dre came to greet new students personally.
