“Devil’s Night” was released on June 19, 2001, 22 unbelievable years ago. It was a debut album for both Detroit hip hop supergoup D12 and Eminem’s label Shady Records.
And for both it was a resounding success. “Devil’s Night” debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 with 372,000 album sales in its first week.
Started in 1996 as Proof’s project, D12 was a loose formation that united talented undergrouned rappers from Michigan. Its line-up had changed a couple of times before forming a classic composition you can here on this album: Bizarre, Eminem, Kuniva, Mr. Porter,
Proof, and Swifty McVay.
While there is no hope for the full revival of D12 since Proof’s tragic death, the impact the album has left on the culture, lives on. And such members as Swifty McVay, Bizarre, and Kuniva keep carry the torch, while staying busy with their own projects. Just recently, Swifty McVay and Kuniva supported Snoop Dogg on the Australian leg of his Australasia tour, meeting famous fans who came backstage specifically to see legendary D12 artists.
So on the day of the “Devil’s Night” release, Kuniva posted on his Instagram account a reminder and a question to his followers:
22yrs ago today we dropped this classic album. What a time to be alive! What was your favorite track on this album?? 🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯#D12 #BigProof4Ever #Eminem #D12IsForever #ShadyRecords #DertyDozen #RipBUGZD12
There is no wistful nostalgia in this message, just the recognition of a job well done, and understanding of the impact the group and the album have made to millions and generations of music fans. There is a strong and dedicated D12 following, of which our team is proud part. We are always ready to lend the group and its members our support. While we do not expect anything in return, we do appreciated these tokens of recognition from artists that found its way to our HQ today.
Thank you, Kuniva!
