Even a rap legend has his rituals. A scene in Stans documentary shows how Eminem keeps his voice and creativity in top shape.

Stans documentary let viewers get a rare glimpse into Eminem’s studio life and the small, yet vital, tricks that keep him functioning at peak efficiency.

This particular scene starts with a voicemail from his longtime manager Paul Rosenberg:

“Hey, Em, what’s going on, it’s Paul. Listen, if you want to talk to that camera crew, go ahead. Just don’t say a bunch of dumb shit. Alright, call me back”.

Inside the studio, Eminem shares some of the routines that help him stay sharp. Among them is a throat relieve spray he’s been using for the past seven years. He explains:

“There’s a lot of method to this madness. “Entertainer’s secret”. Shh, don’t tell nobody. Rick Rubin told me about this, and I’ve been using it every day since. I use it on stage. It’s fucking incredible. My voice only lasts so long, especially if I’m doing some screaming shit or something. This is my best friend right here”.

When asked about the taste, he jokes:

“Semen. Not that I know how that tastes, but if I’d have to guess I would say semen”.

Eminem also revealed his pen obsession. On the table sits a handful of Uni-ball Eye UB-157 rollerball pens. With their fine 0.7mm tips, durable stainless steel design, and a see-through ink chamber to monitor ink levels, they ensure he never ends up with a dry pen while writing.

“My go-to pens. For a couple of years, I tried using red ink, blue ink, different colours for different ideas, but it didn’t work. I just stuck to black and stayed with it”, he says.

The pens and his notebook are essential to Em’s creative process:

“Every time I write, there are different stages. That’s one of the reasons I keep the book now. I never get writer’s block. I’m always able to go back in my book and have unlimited ideas”.

He adds that he has a technique that serves two purposes: creative freedom and security:

Sometimes I just write my rhyming words down and not the stuff in between, so it can’t be put together if someone finds it.

Even the smallest tools, like spray and pens, play a huge role in helping Eminem channel his creativity. It might not be that important for the general public, but fans treasure these tidbits of information.
