“The Marshall Mathers LP” has achieved something it could not have 25 years ago.

The album that defined a generation has stormed back onto the charts thanks to a long-awaited anniversary vinyl reissue. The new edition sparked a 2,220% surge in sales, a number that looks astronomical even for Slim Shady.

New hights

According to Luminate, the album sold almost 5,500 copies during the last tracking week. Admittedly, a massive jump from fewer than 250 copies the week before. Many of those sales came from the freshly released vinyl, which fans had been waiting for since the announcement in May.

CDs, cassettes, and digital downloads also contributed to the total, proving there’s still strong demand for physical music on the market.

As a result, “The Marshall Mathers LP” reappeared on multiple Billboard charts. It debuted at No.7 on the Vinyl Albums chart, marking Eminem’s sixth entry and sixth Top 10 on that ranking. It also returned to the Top Album Sales chart at No.23, landed at No.129 on the Billboard 200, and came back to the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart at No.39.

Interestingly, Eminem has never reached No.1 on the Vinyl Albums chart. His closest shot came with “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)”, which debuted at No. 2 in 2024. This is a flex in itself for a rapper who got to this point 25 years into his career.

Lasting impact

Originally released in 2000, “The Marshall Mathers LP” was a turning point in Eminem’s career. He had already put his claim to the iconic status with the “Slim Shady LP”, but MMLP made everybody accept Shady’s dominance. He confirmed his place among hip hop’s elite through his unmatched storytelling, dark humour, and rare emotional vulnerability. Songs like “Stan”, “The Way I Am”, and “Kim” redefined what rap could sound like. They made the album one of the most important releases of its era.

Now, 25 years later, the renewed interest in “The Marshall Mathers LP” shows that its power has not faded. Be it through streaming or spinning the vinyl, fans keep returning to the album that shaped modern hip hop and launched Eminem into superstardom.
