The journalist calls the doc both fascinating and unsettling, spotlighting Eminem’s impact and the complex nature of fandom.
Collider’s review of Stans lands at a solid 8/10, calling it a “fascinating look behind the curtain of Eminem’s life and career” and an unflinching portrait of parasocial relationships in the 21st century. According to the author, the documentary blends Marshall Mathers’s own reflections on fame with in-depth (and sometimes eyebrow-raising) interviews from fans whose lives revolve around him.
The review praises the variety of perspectives and how Eminem’s input ensures viewers see both sides of the artist–fan dynamic. It also points out what is missing, wishing for a deeper exploration of how fans processed the song “Stan” and a cameo from Devon Sawa. Still, Collider says Marshall “comes across as the music industry’s most unwitting messiah”, connecting with people on such a personal level that even his darkest moments have inspired them to seek help.
