A sealed, signed copy of Eminem’s debut album Infinite has sold for $104,920 at Goldin Auctions, setting a new all-time record for a hip hop vinyl and surpassing his own previous benchmark by tens of thousands of dollars.
Slow start, strong finish
For a month, the lot was open on Goldin. The first bid of $2,500 was placed on April 5, and bidding initially moved slowly. Actually, it took a month for an offer to reach $30,000. However, in the last week, the battle intensified. In the final stretch, two serious bidders emerged: one raising in $5,000 increments, and another by $10,000 at once. Eventually, it was the latter who raised the stakes to $86,000, which, coming to $104,920 with the buyer’s premium.
New record
In fact, this result set a new record for Goldin and for the whole industry, globally, the highest ever sale for a hip hop vinyl.
Of course, the main value in this package comes from Eminem’s signature. Apparently, it is not difficult to find a sealed record without it for $6,000-7,000. However, another signed copy went from the Goldin auction for $62,000 in 2023. That time, there was even a video of Marshall signing the sleeve. And yet, three years later, a new achievement effectively wiped out this result.
Undoubtedly, the collector’s interest reflects the cultural significance of an item. Admittedly, not in the way streaming numbers do, but on a longer, slower timescale. If current sales indicate an immediate interest, collectors invest in future. It is not nostalgia that drives their purchases; they believe that, with time, the item will only grow in value. So, if anything, this spike of interest shows that Eminem’s place in the cultural pantheon only becomes more secure with time.
Humble beginnings
Another layer of meaning for this remarkable sale comes from the understanding that Infinite is an album that was a complete commercial disaster. Basically self-published, recorded with local producers, and distributed by hand, Infinite did not bring Eminem the success he so desperately wanted. In the end, the failure pushed him further, made him stronger, and paved the way to the heights he inhabits now. So, for this exact record to become the most expensive hip hop vinyl in the world – that’s the full circle moment nobody saw coming in 1996, when Infinite dropped.
