Dr. Dre’s famous mixing board used on albums by Eminem, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, and more just became the most expensive piece of hip hop studio gear ever sold.
The SSL 4000 G+ mixing console was auctioned by the memorabilia platform The Realest during its “Straight Outta The West Coast Hip-Hop” sale, which also included rare pieces from DJ Yella, Snoop Dogg, and Xzibit. Previously, the record was held by RZA’s E-mu SP-1200 drum machine, used on Wu-Tang Clan’s debut album, which sold for $69,000 in 2023. Dre’s console sold for $165,000, setting a new record for a hip hop instrument or studio item.
The board, still on display at the Grammy Museum in LA, was purchased by collector Ryan Zurrer, who posted on X:
“Still the same OG, but low key.
Grateful to pick up the signature instrument that Dre took the time to perfect the beat… still DRE.
Zurrer added that this “iconic part of hip-hop history” will eventually be housed at the Hip Hop Museum “because it ain’t no fun if the homies can’t have none”.
