The Detroit rap institution is getting ready to release a new album for the first time in over 20 years. After announcing the release date earlier, Kuniva and Swifty McVay have now revealed more details about the project.
Last men standing
In recent years, two D12 members have continued carrying the torch for the legendary rap group that Proof founded back in 1996. Eminem collaborated with the band from the very beginning but formally joined the Dirty Dozen only after one of the original members, Bugz, was shot and killed in 1999.
Bizarre, who’s been with D12 from the very beginning, later said they had a pact – whoever broke through first would assist the rest of the crew. It was Eminem who reached an enormous level of popularity. So, he held up his end of the bargain. Soon after setting up his own label under Interscope, he signed D12 and started working on their album. The debut record, Devil’s Night, was released in 2001, and D12 World followed in 2004. Eminem, Mr. Porter, and Dr. Dre handled the production. Both albums sold strongly, each debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Tragically, Proof’s death in 2006 put the group on hiatus, and D12 was never the same afterwards. Occasionally, Eminem would hop on a track for a mixtape, but he stopped being an active member of the group. Eventually, he effectively announced the end of the group in his Kamikaze song “Stepping Stones”. Bizarre and Mr. Porter (Kon Artis) left in 2012, but both would return from time to time – to record a song or to go on tour together. Swifty McVay and Kuniva remained the only band members remained fully committed to keeping D12 alive. Now, the tracklist makes it apparent that other former members did not join this revival project.
New chapter
Kuniva and Swifty position their upcoming album, D12 Forever, as a new chapter in the band’s history. However, the features list looks so familiar. With only two active group members involved, almost every song on the project features a guest, sometimes two.
Singer and songwriter Melanie Rutherford has collaborated with Royce 5’9, Slaughterhouse, Benny the Butcher, Slum Village and many more. Xzibit and B-Real both worked with D12 before, and they helped launch the album campaign with their collab, “Tear It Down”, released as the first single from the album. The presence of Method Man, Ice T, Tech N9ne, and George Clinton excites fans but also stands in contrast to the glaring absence of other band members on the project. At the same time, familiar song titles, especially “My Salsa”, imply that we might hear new takes on previously released material.
One track draws a lot of attention. It’s “Proof & Eli” feat. Eli Ble$$ed. Earlier, D12 announced that they included Proof’s previously unreleased verse on the album. Apparently, this is where it will surface. Additionally, with Proof’s son featured on the song, it promises to be especially poignant. Eli has released less material than his brother, NASAAN. Still, he has already performed at a D12 festival last summer.
