At the 2023 BET Awards red carpet, Big Daddy Kane gave a short interview about Eminem’s segment in his new documentary, and listening to Eminem’s music when he just came up.

An interviewer didn’t ask Big Daddy Kane about Em directly, he asked about documentary interviews that impressed him the most, and from the previous Kane’s remarks we already know the answer:

The interview with Eminem was very, very intense. He mentioned some things that I guess I never really paid attention to or even thought about. I had to really sit and say, “Are you sure that I’m the first person you know who did that?! Hold on, let me double check”. He mentioned some things that I never really thought about it or I even paid attention to.

This answer gives us a glimpse into what their conversation was about. Marshall, ever the student of hip hop and a loyal fan of his hip hop idols, probably analysed Big Daddy’s music, lyrics, and style and revealed to him something that Big Daddy Kane himself was not aware about. Whatever it is, we are ready to see the documentary already.

However, the interviewer was not ready to let Big Daddy go and stayed on the topic asking about Kane’s experience with the Eminem music. Unsurprisingly, he recognised Em’s potential from the first sight:

Honestly, the first time I heard Eminem was “Slim Shady”. Somebody else played something that he was on before and let me hear. I was like, “Yo, he is nice! He’s nice and he’s funny”. And then when I heard him get real super lyrical, I was like, “Oh, nah, this dude is a problem. He’s dope”.

Finally, a journalist was curious about how long it took to arrange a meeting for the interview with Em, considering his reputation of a recluse. Of course, it was not a problem for a hip hop legend:

We reached out and we got word back probably a week or two.
