Jonathan Mannion’ photos have made to covers of over 300 albums of such hip hop and R&B stars as Jay Z, Dr. Dre, Outkast, Nas, Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne and Kendrick Lamar. He shot covers for Eminem’s “The Marshal Mathers LP”, “The Eminem Show” and “Curtain Call”.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of iconic “The Marshal Mathers LP” he shared the picture that he thought would be the album cover. Shot in Amsterdam, where the major part of the album was recorded, for him it summarised the city and the mood perfectly. Eminem did not share this opinion so now we can have a look at “what if”.
To caption his picture Jonathan Mannion wrote:
ALTERNATELY. I made a strong argument for this being the second cover for #themarshallmatherslp, but the two others were simply stronger “storytellers.” This image made the packaging, but only in the interior. The idea was it was the last thing that was seen before passing out in Amsterdam. It was a psychedelic image, for me, that represented an altered state, excess and the feeling of being a little out of control, but on a beautiful journey. What a 20 year run it has been for this musical genius, @eminem. After all these years, my respect for him is still supreme. 📷
