As per old tradition, April 1 gives celebrities a chance to prank their fans mercilessly, and social media provides them with all the tools. Culture reporters then put together a collection of the most memorable pranks to remember. This year, we have both Marshall and 50 Cent entering the Complex list.

Jokes are on us

Truth be told, those jokes rarely make fans laugh with joy, as they usually exploit the audience’s biggest expectations. Just look at the history of Marshall’s recent jokes. In 2024, everyone was waiting for more info on his upcoming album, which was earlier announced by Dr Dre.

Meanwhile, Marshall ambushed the fans with the “news” of releasing Infinite x 2. The collage of screenshots of tweets demanding new music from Marshall proved that he was perfectly aware of the level of anticipation haunting the fandom back then and decided to rub it in their faces. Or, rather, it was his team’s decision. It is difficult to imagine Eminem making screengrabs of fan mail or narrating the script to his assistants. But was he aware of the idea? Most probably.

Last year, Em’s social media shared a mock-up of a t-shirt design built on a line from “Trouble,” a track from The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce):

You gonna cancel me, yeah? Gen-Z me, bruh?

A magical animal, Jenzimibra, was not up for adoption. Theere was no t-shirt in his online shop, only a message declaring, “THIS MERCH IDEA HAS BEEN CANCELED”.

A joke or a dream?

This year, there was no original input from Eminem’s camp. However, he shared a joke that Complex posted. The magazine’s Instagram posted “breaking news” about Marshall signing to play quarterback, adorned with an AI-generated image of Eminem in Detroit Lions gear.

“Exclusive: Marshall B. Mathers, III pka Eminem strikes up a deal with his hometown Detroit Lions and furthers their ongoing partnership in a stunning move by signing a 1 day exclusive NFL exception contract to play quarterback for the Lions’ home opener in the upcoming 2026-27 season at Ford Field, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “Ever since I was just a kid in Detroit I always dreamed about this moment. It’s a real full circle thing for me. It’s my one shot, so to speak! I’m not afraid.” The deal is signed- pending Mathers clearing the team’s physical protocol exams led by Dr. Dre”
.

Admittedly, not the worst joke, save the execution. Especially, considering how often Marshall joked about being ready to step on the field for his beloved Lions.

Millions of 50 Cent

Another special mention on the list went to 50 Cent. Actually, Fifty does not really wait for April Fool’s Day to trick his followers or confuse his haters. The best strategy is to take every one of his posts with a grain of salt. However, exactly the one he posted on April 1 looked so innocent and in line with his recent success that many fell for it. The TMZ logo added credibility to the info about his new documentary project. “HULU wins in a bidding war against STARZ, NETFLIX, and APPLE for my new doc”, Fifty captioned his post. There is no such news on TMZ.

However, just days before, TMZ reported on Fif’s $100 million deal with Planet Hollywood that will let him build a new venue in Times Square. Honestly, the amount of money celebrities operate with at this level is so arbitrary that it won’t make anybody stop in their track. The first question fans had when they saw this post was not whether it was true, but who Fifty would go after with his new doc. And who knows, this joke might turn out to be true in a short time.
