“Smack That” by Akon has achieved 1 billion views on YouTube, making it his first music video to reach this milestone. This marks Marshall’s sixth such video.
Released in 2006, the song and its music video continue to attract a large audience. In the last 28 days, it has received 19.5 million views globally, surpassing “Stan” with 15.3 million views, but falling short of “Love The Way You Lie” with 20.1 million views.
The video was directed by Benny Boom, who has worked with artists such as Nicki Minaj, Sean Combs, Keyshia Cole, and 50 Cent, in addition to Akon. One of his notable projects is the 2017 biopic “All Eyez on Me” about Tupac Shakur. The music video’s success can be attributed to a well-told plot, reminiscent of the 1980s film “48 Hrs”, featuring cameos from artists such as Fat Joe, Layzie Bone of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Nas, and more. And, of course, a banging song in the core of it.
