Dr. Dre revealed that controversy around the NFL’s racial inequality and the way they treated Colin Kaepernick almost made him pull out of the Super Bowl LVI halftime show.
Dre sat down with Dolvett Quince of the Workout the Doubt podcast and told him that the situation was close to putting a stop to all preparations. But when in doubt, Dr. Dre talks to his friends:
I was absolutely concerned about that. I actually called a couple of close friends and said, “Listen, I’m gonna pull out. I’m not gonna do the show. Because I don’t know if I want that smoke. I don’t know if I want the backlash after doing the show and potentially looking like a fucking sellout or something like that”. I got on the phone with Nas. He called me up and was like, “Yo, bro” — you know, Nas has that voice — “Yo, bro, you gotta do it. You gotta do this. It’s gonna be so powerful for fucking Hip Hop, for the culture, for you, for L.A. and the whole nine”. We were on the phone for like 10 minutes, and he talked me into doing it. Nas and Jay-Z were big reasons why I decided to do the show.
At the end of the day, it was the right decision. Dr. Dre put together a stellar lineup for the first ever hip hop Superbowl that will forever stay in history books. Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and Mary J. Blige — the Superbowl gave the platform to hip hop and, ultimately, to those who will no longer be silenced.
