Conway had a difficult task to go through brackets to choose which member of a rap group had the best solo career, and he chose Dr. Dre out of 16 contenders.
“Brackets” is a “Complex” show where celeb guests pick winners of a themed bracket until a field of 16 is narrowed to one winner. In this episode, Conway had to go through 16 rappers who started their solo careers after leaving rap groups.
Some choices were difficult, some more obvious. In the very first round, the Griselda rapper had to choose between Dr. Dre and Cordae. And with all respect to this young rapper, he did not stand a chance in this face-off. Dre’s opponent in the next round was more difficult to choose over. Method Man is not only a Wu-Tang legend, he has also contributed a feature to Machine’s single “Lemon”. However, Conway had to make a pick:
I set myself up with this one. We gotta talk about “Chronic 2000”. All the Eminem shit. The Kendrick shit. The Game shit. The Aanderson Pack shit even right now. Doc Dre, his career at some point kind of fell back and focused more on other entities that he got going on — the big three, the right fees, and TV shows and all that shit. Dre’s been in a lab, you feel me. Musically, I gotta go Dre, Dr. Dre right now.
In the final four, Dr. Dre faced Jadakiss, and this time Conway felt less distressed than before, choosing the Good Doctor as his favourite immediately:
Doc Dre, like I said. That nigga dropped nothing but a G thing. You know, Jadakiss — Thor, Dr. Dre is Odin, man.
The final round saw Dr. Dre against Busta Rhymes, and Conway was choosing his words very carefully:
This is a lot closer than people might think. Dr. Dre has released some of the illest albums in hip hop history, “The Chronic” and “Doggystyle”. I don’t care which one you choose, I guarantee you he had that in everybody’s top five albums of all time. And that was not part of NWA, that was his solo. Busta, your career is unprecedented. He’s still on the tier, and he’s far from finished. Career-wise… I believe Busta was even signed to Aftermath. Yeah, so I gotta go with Dr. Dre.
