Ty Dolla $ign stopped by DJ WhooKid’s show on Eminem’s Shade45 to talk about his style, influences, relationship with other stars, admiration for the rap legend, and how their collaboration came to be.
During the chat, WhooKid reminded Ty of a bold statement he once made online.
“I saw somewhere you said Eminem is one of the biggest artists in your world”, the host said.
Ty did not hesitate. “Back in the day, I tweeted it”, he replied. “I’ll never forget it because I actually stand on it and believe it. The only rapper better than Eminem is Slim Shady”.
Then he explained why. “Name somebody who made a better song than ‘Stan’! Writing, making people cry, changing people’s lives – there are certain people that can do that. He did that in rap”.
Ty Dolla $ign on Eminem’s Impact
Ty placed Eminem in the same league as very few musical icons. “There are songs that change lives”, he said. “‘Today Was a Good Day’ by Ice Cube is one. The Beatles did that a gang of times. Eminem did it too. I always looked up to him. And I’ve got to make a song with him!”
The Story Behind Their Collaboration
To this day, he sounds excited about working with Em. According to Ty, it happened during the pandemic. “I was just recording, having fun, not knowing what would happen”, he recalled. “Next thing you know, I get the Eminem call. I’m like, what?!”
Subsequently, that call led to “My Favourite Bitch”, featured on “Music to Be Murdered By: Side B”. Apparently, they recorded the song after the album’s original release in January 2020.
Interestingly, just weeks before the project dropped, Ty had publicly praised Eminem and asked for a feature. Soon enough, Slim Shady answered.
Ty’s respect for Em has not changed. As he put it, “The only rapper better than Eminem is Slim Shady”.
