Eminem Featured on New Nas Album

Sports journalist Stephen A. Smith tackled the age-old debate: who’s the better rapper, Eminem or Nas? While acknowledging both rappers as “one of the greatest ever”, Smith offered his own well-reasoned perspective.

Answering this provocative question during his interview on the “Connect The Dots” podcast, Smith points out the distinct styles of the two artists: Nas, with his complex wordplay and lyrics rooted in street knowledge, and Eminem, with his straightforward and accessible delivery. Though Smith acknowledges the “best of Nas” surpassing “the best of Eminem”, he ultimately gives the edge to Eminem due to his “more consistent greatness”.

Here’s Smith’s insightful take, emphasising respect for both rappers:

I think Eminem is one of the greatest ever. I also think Nas is one of the greatest ever. Nas’ lyrics are off the chain, but it requires more street knowledge and more of a comprehension of the verbiage to really dissect. Whereas with Eminem, he gives it to you simple and plain. I’m going to have to say as much as I love Nas, and I do love Nas, I have to give the edge to Eminem. Now, the best of Nas is better than the best of Eminem. But Eminem’s — there’s more consistency to his greatness as opposed to Nas is what I’m trying to say. Which is why I have to give the edge.

While some may disagree with his conclusion, Smith’s respect for both artists and his clear breakdown of their contrasting styles make an interesting contribution to the ongoing debate.
