Eminem and Lil Wayne are in the game for so long that it is difficult for them to find inspiration. Hip-hop legends discuss how they cope and what drives their pens.
Lil Wayne started this conversation with explaining that all this new music and new stuff he listens too can only spur his creativity for so long, a buzz warns out quickly and he comes back to his natural inspiration, the same that was behind his creative efforts all along. Marshall agreed:
Eminem: When we first start out it was like just a blank canvas and we paint on that shit and keep painting it, so every area is full. When you’ve made so many songs about everything it gets a little tricky. The trick is to be able to do the next one and keep it going. And do the next one with a little twist. You probably write all the time and I do too.
Lil Wayne: I look at it like we are proving we are not insane. You know, the definition is of insanity is that someone does something over and over expecting different results. The same thing. You just said, we’ve painted the whole canvas already with everything and we’re still figuring out how to use everything and make it something else.
Eminem: Yeah, that’s the thing to me. Like, listening to “Funeral”, you’ve got a different pocket all the time. I don’t know if the average listener who isn’t really into hip-hop understands how hard that is to do.
Lil Wayne: Very.
Eminem: You start getting to the point where you’ve rapped about everything, you’ve rhymed every word there is to rhyme.
