The intruder who stalked and broke into Eminem’s home for a second time has now been handed a lengthy prison sentence.

Matthew Hughes was sentenced Tuesday in Macomb County Circuit Court to 15–30 years for first-degree home invasion and 3–7.5 years for aggravated stalking. The sentences will run consecutively, meaning Hughes will serve a minimum of 18 years behind bars. He was also ordered to stay at least 500 feet away from Eminem and have no further contact with him, The Detroit News reports.

The August 2024 break-in occurred in a gated Clinton Township neighbourhood and followed a previous 2020 incident when Hughes broke a window to enter Eminem’s house while Marshall was asleep. In that case, Eminem confronted the man himself before security detained him. During a hearing that year, a police officer testified that Hughes told Em he was “there to kill him”.

Despite being sentenced to five years probation in 2021 for the first break-in, Hughes was soon charged with violating probation and accused of assaulting a mall security officer.

“No one, celebrity or not, should ever feel unsafe in their own home”, said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido in his statement. “This sentence sends a clear message that stalking and home invasion will be taken seriously in Macomb County and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Everyone has the right to privacy, safety, and peace of mind”.
