Almost two weeks ago, Eminem became a grandfather for the second time. The Alaina, whom we first met as Lainie on “Mockingbird”, gave her daughter a name that made Hailie emotional.
Eminem’s message
Eminem, who got custody of Alaina, Hailie, and Stevie around the time the song was written, addressed Alaina in each “Mockingbird” verse, finishing with this one:
I’m sittin’ in this empty house just reminiscin’
Lookin’ at your baby pictures, it just trips me out
To see how much you both have grown, it’s almost like you’re sisters now
Wow, guess you pretty much are, and Daddy’s still here
Lainie, I’m talkin’ to you too, Daddy’s still here
I like the sound of that, yeah, it’s got a ring to it, don’t it?
And yes, they are indeed sisters, whose strong bond Alaina celebrates with one of the most moving dedications one can imagine. She named her firstborn child after all of them.
The meaning behind the name
Introducing her daughter to the world, Alaina shared a meaning behind her name. “Scottie, in honour of my ‘scott sisters’”, Alaina posted on her Instagram account. “The women who have given the name and my life so much meaning. May she now give it a meaning of her own and always know how loved she is, by mom + dad, and her aunties”.
Some outlets were quick to suggest that Alaina was honouring her mother and her twin sister, Kim, Hailie’s mom. And while this reference also echoes in the name, Alaine meant, first of all, her own sisters, the ones she grew up with. That logic felt more organic for choosing a name that would symbolically provide a child with support and protection.
A Scott sister approves
Moreover, Hailie confirmed this version on her podcast, opening the latest episode with the big news: she’s an auntie now. Talking about the name, Hailie gave a clear interpretation:
“My sister Alaina named her baby Scottie after the Scott sisters, which is our maiden names before we were both married, and our sister Stevie. So exciting! A strong woman to come after her fellow Scott sisters”. Hailie is truly excited about her niece. However, she found the sensation of holding a newborn in her arms a little bit bizarre. The gap between Elliot Marshall and Scottie is so small and so precisely timed!
“Holding a little baby is just like the craziest thing”, Hailie shared. “Elliot’s obviously 13 months. Actually, that was another cool thing that happened. Scottie happened to be born on 4.14, and Elliot’s birthday is 3.14. So, they’re exactly a month apart with their birthdays. Obviously, 13 months now, but every year it’ll be his birthday and then hers, a month later”. What a peculiar and heart-warming connection between two cousins!
While Alaina cannot get enough of her precious child and already wants “a hundred more” children, she also has her Scott sisters around, ready to help and support. And importantly, extending the family tradition, the tight bond down to a new generation.
