Fans brought Eminem to the top, leaving Lil Uzi Vert at the second place.
The Genius Community has been eliminating potential candidates for the 2020 Lyricist Of The Year title in a bracket challenge for some time now. Eventually, out of 16 rappers only two left – Lil Uzi Vert and Eminem. And the hive mind decided to crown Marshall the Lyricist Of The Year.
Eminem had to go against unquestionably strong lyricists in this challenge and every time he emerged victoriously on top. His first opponent was Black Thought in round one. Then the community decided in his favour against fellow Detroit-rapper Big Sean in round two and Freddie Gibbs in round three. The final stand-out with Lil Uzi Vert was the most challenging, as the young rapper has had a good year and enjoys an active and equally young fan following. However, talent and longevity prevailed.
Em certainly deserves this title as he is not only one of the greatest pens in hip hop, as KXNG Crooked recently described him. His most recent album “Music To Be Murdered By” added a sizeable layer to his legacy and kept the fans engaged with his new music this year. Even without giving much thought to promoting his own music, Marshall made some memorable appearances on guest appearances on Jessie Reyez’ “Coffin”, Kid Cudi’s “The Adventures of Moon Man & Slim Shady” and Big Sean’s “Friday Night Cypher”.
Ultimately, he rarely left the top 5 lyricists of the month list this year and not because of some agitated voting but simply on merits of his own writing, because the audience kept coming to his texts, stayed engaged with them, continued connecting to his lyrics.
