Elon Musk’s lawyers listed Eminem under the “authorities” section of the brief submitted to the court and the billionaire thinks he is the second Shady now.
In a freshly filed motion, attorneys for Musk used lines from Eminem’s 2002 hit:
The FCC won’t let me be or let me be me, so let me see
They tried to shut me down.
A quote from “Without Me” is not a joke but a legal precedent to which Elon Musk’s lawyers refer in the document that aims to overturn the decree requiring him to seek legal approval for any statements about his company.
In 2002, the decision of the Federal Communications Commission to fine a radio station for playing Eminem’s music was overturned out of deference to the First Amendment. That’s the FCC Shady teased in his song.
Musk uses the same line of defence, calling for the freedom of speech. The billionaire signed the consent decree, which he is trying to overturn now, after his tweets about Tesla had influenced the stock market and the company value. The Securities and Exchange Commission imposed the decree, so the quote was modified by subbing in “SEC” for “FCC” in Eminem’s lyric in the filing.
Elon Musk is so inspired by the media coverage of this story that now he’s bragging on Twitter about how much he and Eminem have in common:
I mean we’re basically identical – a few differences maybe …
