2017.12.13 - Ed Sheeran and Eminem epro HQ

From practising the last verse of “Criminal” to bonding over Marvel movies, Ed Sheeran opens up about his childhood hero Eminem, and the polygraph says he was telling the truth.

Ed Sheeran has never been shy about his admiration for Eminem. In a recent Vanity Fair lie detector interview, the pop star reflected on how learning Eminem lyrics as a child helped him overcome a stutter — an experience that clearly left a lasting impact.

Asked if that makes him Eminem’s biggest fan, Ed laughed it off: “Obviously, I like him”, he said, “but there’s definitely people that take it to a different level”.

When it comes to the hardest verse he ever tried to master, Sheeran did not hesitate. Neither did he forget the lines he effortlessly rapped on the spot: “There’s a song called ‘Criminal’ — its last verse:

Windows tinted on my ride when I drive in it
So when I rob a bank, run out and just dive in it

When you have a stutter, all of that’s quite difficult”.

Interestingly, Eminem was already aware of Ed’s story by the time they met. “He’d heard it already”, Sheeran said. “There’d been chatter online about it, and he’d picked up on that. We talked about Marvel films”.

As for what he actually calls the rapper in person, Ed confirmed that he uses Marshall now: “It gets to a point where it’s weird to call him Eminem, because everyone in his circle calls him Marshall. And if you aren’t doing it, then you’re not in the circle”.
Still, he added with a smile, “Yeah… super weird”.

And yes, the polygraph confirmed: all of it was the truth.
