The song selection is approved, the rehearsals are about to start – Dr. Dre is excited to present a show of his dreams.
Dr. Dre called to the Big Boy radio show to update him and his listeners on how Super Bowl Halftime show preparations are going. The legendary producer admits that he is feeling the pressure of opening a new page in the Super Bowl history:
It’s really exciting. Several people were banging me over the head about doing the show, Snoop being one of them. Of course, I was, and I still am extremely nervous about it, but I’m excited about it at the same time. We’ve been working hard to put together a fantastic show. The first time they’re allowing hip hop artists to headline the Super Bowl, and we’re getting ready to go at it. We know we’re going to open the door for other hip hop artists to be able to do Super Bowl Halftime shows in the future.
The show length has always been a concern. The line-up of this event is incredible: Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige and, of course, the Good Doctor himself. How much time do they have on stage? Not nearly enough, but longer than is usually allowed at this event:
Normally they allow 11 minutes, but they gave us north of 13 minutes to do our thing.
Five immense talents and no more than 13 minutes of stage time. How to select songs to reflect each personality and leave the most impact?
Because of the lack of time, we’re just going to go right to the hits, to the heavy hitters. Get in, have a great time up there, excite the friends and excite the people, and get out. This is probably going to be a springboard for some of the things that’s going to happen in the future that we have planned. We all got together, and everybody’s really comfortable with the song selection. We know exactly what we’re going to do. We have an amazing music director Adam Blackstone, he’s over the top with it. Everybody’s really excited about the song selection. It’s time for the rehearsals to start.
Does Dr. Dre have any special feelings about playing this unprecedented show on his home ground, at the new SoFi stadium in Los Angeles? Of course, he does:
It’s the best stadium I’ve ever walked in. Of course, we’re rooting for the Rams to play. That’s my dream for the Rams to be in the Super Bowl on the night that we’re performing Super Bowl here in Los Angeles — that would make a dream come true, that would be over the top.
While we are all excited about the upcoming Halftime show, the hint that Dre dropped about other events they had already planned invites even higher expectations. Rumours about resurrected plans of the Beats and Rhymes tour comes to mind immediately. The tour planned for Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar. Do you think we’ll still have a chance to see it? Or do you have other ideas?
